Equus Home How does magnetic therapy work?

No-one knows for sure how magnets work as an aid to healing. There are 3 main theories. The first and most popular is that magnets improve circulation and as a result speed up the natural healing process by increasing the blood supply to the injured area and by removing toxins and waste products. The second theory is that magnets rebalance the natural magnetic field all living creatures have, thereby promoting healing. The third theory is that magnets affect the atoms that compose living organisms and help to bring about the change necessary for healing.

What is certain is the growing anecdoctal evidence of the benefits of magnetic therapy for both people and animals.

What type of conditions can magnetic therapy be used for?

Magnetic therapy can be used for a wide range of conditions. Because magnets help the bodies natural healing ability they can be used in both acute and chronic conditions. When used after injury they can accelerate healing time by up to one third (NB: Do not use on open wounds or in the first 48-72 hours after severe injury). For chronic conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism, magnetic therapy can help to reduce inflamation and alleviate pain. Magnetic Therapy can relieve circulatory problems (eg lymphangitis) and has also helped some people who suffer with migraines.

When should I not use Magnetic Therapy?

Do not use as a substitute for Veterinary or medical advice.
In the first 48-72 hours of an acute injury.
On infected wounds, abscesses or open wounds, especially where there is bleeding.
On inflammed areas.
On areas that have been treated topically in the last 24 hours (eg with liniment or iodine based preparations - a reaction may occur which can blister the skin)
On any area containing metal ie plates, screws, pins.
During exercise.
During pregnancy.

There are lots of different magnets on the market, why should I use Armadillo Magnetic Therapy products?

Armadillo Magnets are extremely comfortable to wear as they are rubberised making them flexible.

They are also machine washable, which makes them easy to care for.

The magnets used are designed to provide the maximum contact surface area against the body. The larger surface area means that the magnet penetrates deeper. A small magnet, no matter how strong cannot penetrate deep enough into the the tissues to heal. This becomes especially important when treating a large muscular area such as a horse's back or hind quarters.

I've heard there are different types of magnets. Which type are used in Armadillo Magnetic Products and Why?

Armadillo Magnetic Therapy Products use Unipolar South Seeking magnets. Natural occuring magnets have their opposing poles (North and South) on opposite sides. When used during therapy they are known as Unipolar as only one pole can act on the body at any time. The South Seeking Pole has many beneficial affects such as increasing circulation and reducing pain and inflammation, whereas the North Seeking Pole does the opposite. Armadillo Magnetic Therapy products only contain Unipolar, South Seeking magnets.

How long should I wear the Magnetic Therapy Product for?

Magnets should be used for short periods at a time. The greatest effects are felt during the first few hours. After this the body readjusts.

Magnets can be very powerful and a small number of people may feel sick and dizzy when first wearing them. It is important therefore, when first using magnets with animals, to ensure that you introduce them gradually and watch the animal when you first put them on for any signs that they are uncomfortable.

Can I use Magnetic Therapy for general wellbeing?

Yes definitely! Many of us tend to wait until something goes wrong and then spend time and money trying to fix it. Magnotherapy can be used to help both yourself and your animals to stay in peak condition. The horse rug for example can be used during travel to help prevent horses becoming tight and tense or after competing to help prevent stiff muscles developing.

The dog bed is ideal for your canine (or feline) friends. Animals instinctively know when they need help and will lie on the bed when they need it most.

And for us humans, why not treat yourself to some healing therapy with the Magnetic Wraps after a hard session tidying up the muck heap!

Remember prevention is better than cure!
